They're ripping out all of the seats, teasing us with hires of '88 legends, all the while ignoring the fact that the most crucial piece to winning games (having good ball players) is going mostly ignored. They've pissed off the guy who has become the face of the franchise now. It's actually hard to figure out the philosophy of this regime, but the more you see things, the more it seems that the McBankrupt/DePendejo tandem will follow the Donald Sterling school of team ownership--invest as little as possible in the actual product, ride the waves of plush settings, and count the profits. The only piece missing is if the teams happens to win, then that's just gravy--but not essential. These are trying times for Dodgers fans, we may need something miraculous like Treebeard amassing an army to help us through this mess.

On semi-good news, the Kings are off to a fast start at 6-2. But we learned a lesson the hard way from the past baseball season about getting too excited about fast starts.

Lakers pre-season is under way. The more things change, the more they stay the same. After a few pre-season games, the defense still sucks and they don't have a legitimate #2 scoring threat. Maybe Phil will work his magic, but I still don't see this team making the play-offs regardless of what Jerry Buss says.

Peace Out.

-El Maestro

From the hotel room...

Tracy's finally gone.

Although I never loathed Tracy as much as some of the other bloggers around (firejimtracy.com), I did believe the Dodgers were winning in spite of him during the first 4 years he was there. He always left pitchers in way too long didn't have the balls to bring in Gagne in the 8th inning of close ballgames. The whole 1st base fiasco this year was ridiculous. Playing Jason Phillips at first base!?!?!?! We should give him some credit. He did help develop the likes of LoDuca, Gagne, and Izturis. He also allowed Beltre to play through his struggles (although the lure of a free agent contract probably had more to do with his success than Tracy's idiotic baseball moves). But at the end of the day, Tracy thought too much and too frequently came to the wrong conclusion. He obviously can't inspire players to play above and beyond their abilities when it counts (check the Dodgers records the past 5 Septembers). Too many times in the Tracy era the Dodgers would be in 1st place in May/June only to whither as the summer got hotter. The man overmanages and doesn't let his player just play. Put players in a position to succeed, but also let players play.

Good luck in Pittsburgh as you lead your second AAA squad in 2 years.

Peace Out.

-El Maestro

Going on vacation

No more updates until I get to rant/rave about the woeful upcoming Lakers season. When you're going into a stretch of pivotal games that can put you over the hump to get into the playoffs by starting against the Rockies at home (the same Rockies that had won 14 road games all season) and wind up losing 2 of 3, you're going nowhere. The only thing left to determine now is the date the Dodgers will officially be eliminated. If anyone actually reads this column, feel free to add your comments on when that day will be. Only because the NL West is so dreadful, they will survive into relatively late in the season and be elminated from the NL West crown on Sept 26. From the WildCard, they'll be eliminated on Sept 17. My predictions. What are yours?

The other thing that's come to an end is Bradley's career as a Dodger. That goes in the refrigerator as well. I feel for that guy. He's very passionate and above average baseball player. But the crap he puts people through just isn't worth an "above average" player. Good luck. Maybe the Nationals'll give him a chance (a la Guillen), but I seriously doubt the Dodgers will have him back.

Peace Out.

-El Maestro

Simers Rules

TJ Simers of the LA Times is sometimes a jerk for no real good reason. Sometimes his columns are fun to read other times you wonder why the LA Times let's him write when he does practically zero journalistic work. Then you run into his article from today, and realize that in all his non-journalistic sarcasm he will occasionally deliver a line so classic that you just stop reading and bust a gut laughing. Not sure this belongs in a newspaper, but it sure is damn funny to read.

The article is basically trying to write something nice about Jeff Kent. If you don't want to bother reading the whole article, here's the line that got me:

I told him I respected him for that, and then quickly added a cheap shot in case he wanted to hug me or something. (Best wishes to Turiaf)

Work got hectic recently, go figure, so I took a break from wasting cyber-space storage with pathetic tales about LA sports teams. But it's not like I would've written anything worthy anyway. The only positive from the last few weeks is that the Dodgers have gained 3.5 games in the standings over the last week thanks to the Padres having gone winless while the Dodgers have been a rather mediocre 4-3.

Now that the Draft has passed, I can comment on the Lakers. A 17 year old dough boy who recently lost like 35 pounds and had some online profile looking for some action from the ladies? To quote any random character in a Star Wars movie, "I've got a bad feeling about this." Then to top it off, it comes out the Lakers didn't even talk to the guy's coach before drafting him?!?!?!? WTF is Kupchak up to? Do your research before just throwing away the number 10 pick on a project. Which leads to the second pick. A guy I actually liked, Ronny Turiaf. The guy could've been like a Mark Madsen that could score and dance, a rare and dieing breed. But alas, it was discovered the poor bloke has a bad ticker. With a little homework, maybe the Lakers could've figured this out earlier. Again, WTF is Kupchak doing?!?! If a dude has heart problems, maybe you wanna put him through rigorous test before drafting him?

No ill will towards Turiaf, though. Everyone in Laker Land should send prayers and good wishes his way as he gets his ticker tampered with today in Palo Alto.

Best Wishes To Turiaf from the LA Sports Story Blob.

Peace Out.

-El Maestro

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lasportstory.blogspot.com/2005/07/im-back-best-wishes-to-turiaf.html' title='I'm back... He's having Tommy John surgery... again.

Wonder if this little tidbit has caused DePo's laptop to blue screen. (He obviously doesn't use a Mac because anyone smart enough to use a Mac would know baseball greatness can't be measured by stupid computer formulas.) For Dodger fans' sake, I hope DePo learns to value something other than bogusoffense oriented computer statistics. I mean, too many times I've tuned into a game and not's even the 3rd inning and the Dodger starting pitcher has given up a couple of runs and there are a couple of errors against the Bums in blue. Coincidence? Probably not. One gold glove shortstop does not an entire defense make, Mr DePo.

Fix this team and fire Tracy for letting Gagne play pepper in Spring training and then letting him come back too soon!!!

Peace Out.

-El Maestro

Embracing their destiny...

When half the team from last year got traded away or let go, what did everybody think? Admit it, everyone thought, "Next year's team is gonna blow chunks." Then they start 12-2 and we're thinking, "Maybe geek boy has it right on his computer."

Then like the Emperor sweeping in and promising Anakin the way to save Padme's life, the Dodgers thought they knew the answer to everything and were on the verge of conquering the Baseball galaxy. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, their reign as evil overlords of the Baseball Galaxy was *MUCH* shorter than that of the Anakin/Vader. Also unlike Vader, the Dodgers destiny wasn't greatness (say what you will about Vader, but he ultimately kills the Emperor and fulfills the prophecy that he would restore order to the force). We all knew they were a sub .500 team and even with that torrid 12-2 start they were unable keep their destiny at bay for very long. They are now 2 games below .500 after having their once stellar bullpen blow 2 late inning leads--fully embracing their sub .500 selves. If the Padres hadn't sucked so much ass during this same time, my prediction of 10 games back would have been fulfilled by now. But I guess the force is still somewhat strong in these Loser Dodgers so they were able to manufacture Padres losses, while ensuring defeats of their own. I'm still waiting to see if I can utter the phrase, "There is still good left in them" about these Dodgers. I'm just not feeling it yet.

So here we are, 10 days left in June, and everyone in Dodger World is ready for summer without a competitive LA baseball team. The fans in the OC can take their team and shove it in their California of Anaheim posteriors!! It seems like everytime I tune into a game recently, the Dodgers are behind 1-0 regardless of whether it's the 1st, 5th, or 9th inning. Throw some freakin' goose eggs up there to start a game will ya? Alvarez gives up a HR to the first guy he faces. Last night I turn on the game during the bottom of the 1st and it's already 1-0. No NBA action. To top it off, work has been unusually busy for me leaving me less time to gripe about the pathetic Dodgers. I honestly believe Jim Tracy should lose his job. Bring in Gagne in the 9th with a tie game when you need a strikeout. I'd rather have Gagne give up a game winning hit than watch career journeyman Carrara walk in the winning run. It doesn't getting any lower than that.

I can't even bring myself to watch the team anymore. He did manage to give up 4 runs in 1 2/3 innings. Gawd he sucks. What's worse is the biggest weakness from last year (lack of solid starting pitching that can chew up innings) is still here this year and appears to be getting worse. Perez is on the DL, Erickson sucks more than a top of the line Hoover and our other 5th starter (Elmer Dessens, remember him?) is still on the DL. Maybe instead of spending so much time over-hauling the offense, DePo should spend more time re-tooling what has historically brought winning ways to the Dodgers--solid starting pitching!!!

It looks like Lowe, Weaver, and Penny are all we have for now. And Weaver likes taking breaks late in games to give up HR's now. Who would've ever thought that starting pitching was the biggest weakness of a Dodger team? Nice new tradition DePo!!!

And BTW, when the hell are you gonna fire that retard Jim Tracy? The Dodgers win in spite of him, not because of him!!!

Peace Out.

-El Maestro

Retard back on the mound...

Watching the game against the Angels waiting for Mr. Lisa Guerrero to give up his first HR.

I'm sure I'll update this soon with an update about he completely fell apart and cost the Dodgers another game. The next 10 games include 4 against the Cards and 3 games against the Braves and Marlins each. All 3 of those clubs are playing well right now whereas the Dodgers have been playing mediocre at best.

Time for a side rant. What the hell are the Dodgers doing to Nakamura? They bring this poor sap from Japan for next to nothing, while the guy is learning english they "instruct" him on his swing, send the sap down to the minors, bring up him for 39 at AB's and decide he's no longer any good? (FYI he was designated for assignment.) That's just brutal. The guy never stood a chance. If the Ddogers keep treating players like this, no one's gonna wanna play for the club anymore. Put your players in a position to succeed. That's the best way to ensure the team succeeds. The Dodgers just don't seem to believe that philosophy at all.

Speaking of futility, the Lakers are playing "I'll kiss your ass if you kiss mine" with Phil Jackson. The guy wants *tons* and more *tons* of cash to coach a team that is a 6 seed at best. Kupchak is clueless and Buss, who said getting a coach in place is a top priority, decided to take a pre-vacation before his 6 week long European vacation. WTF?!?!?! It's so pathetic this is the last sentence I'll dedicate to the Lakers until they draft some loser that won't make them any better.

Peace out. Man the Rockies must really suck (which is that much more pathetic when you consider the Bums lost 2 of 3 to them the weekend before).

Then they come back and take on a Nationals team (they're basically the Expos plus Vinny Castilla and Jose Guillen) that didn't get into town until 5 am on game day. So they're obviously not well rested. What do the Dodgers do? Lay more goose eggs at the plate. The torrid hitting of the first 14 games is a thing of the distant past now. Gone are the timely, clutch hits as well as any sense of actually being a decent team.

If the Bums make it to the playoffs this year, it'll be because the rest of the NL West sucks and not because the Dodgers actually deserve to be in the playoffs.

Peace Out.

-El Maestro

Tracy costs us another game

When will Tracy get his head out of his ass and realize that 2 smokes for hits leading off the 7th against a starting pitcher is the automatic "time to pull the pitcher" signal? That's never a good sign. It means that either the opposing team has learned the timing of his pitches, learned what the pitcher will throw in that situation, or that the pitcher has tired. None of them are a good option. Take the pitcher, specially if he has a lead, and allow your awesome bullpen get you out of a manageable situation.

Instead, Tracy let's the pitcher hit a batter with the bases loaded to push across the tying run and then goes to the bullpen. Bases loaded with one out, with the heart of the order coming up is not the ideal situation to bring in relievers. So Tracy should've brought in someone from the bullpen earlier. A Carrara for instance. A veteran with enough saavy to get out of that siutation (ignore for a moment the fact that Carrara gave up a run in the 9th). Better than this lefty/righty BS that Tracy seems to have orgasms for.

A manager is supposed to put hs players in a position to succeed, and I'm afraid the Dodgers players often succeed in spite of Tracy and not because of his managerial moves.

dodgerblues.com has it right, "No Dodger team in recent memory has gone from excellence to feces-eating in a shorter period of time."

.5 game out of first after starting the season 12-2. As soon as I start talking about not having a 3 game losing streak, the Bums lose 3. As soon as I mention Tracy doing something stupid like managing for a situation in the future that may or may not come up, Odalis gets sent out with the bases loaded in the 5th while struggling. Any manager with balls would've pulled Odalis. But Tracy is a loser who doesn't manage for the present and thinks too much instead of just letting players play. So the Dodgers are still the best in the NL for now despite Tracy's boneheaded managing.

Let's see if we can get a good nice string going started tonight against Green and the D-Backs.

Peace out.

-El Maestro

Holy Cow!!!

Down 6-0, winning it 8-6 in 10 innings. Beautiful. This is how this team should have been playing all along. The sports world has turned completely upside down with the Dodgers pulling out miraculous victories from the jaws of defeat and the Lakers finishing behind the Clippers in the standings. To quote Vick "The Brick" from the Loose Cannons, "Who Knew?!?!"

Man, I love it when a plan comes together. Depo's insanity during the off-season is turning into a bonafide baseball team. Let's just see how this team reacts when it hits the first losing streak. Better yet, let's see how long before this team loses 3 in a row!!! That'd be awesome if they could make it to the All-Star break without a 3 game losing streak and downright legendary if they could pull it off for an entire season.

But, alas Jim Tracy is still the manager of this team. And as long as he keeps doing his lefty-righty BS and managing for the situation that may come up in an inning or two (or a game or two for that matter), these Bums will get into a prolonged losing streak. I just hope they can build enough distance between themselves and the rest of the division so that it won't matter. :-D

Peace out.

-El Maestro

10-2

No explanation required. After the dissapointing choke job on Opening Day up @ SBC Tard, they came back with 4 wins in a row. Winning 4 of 6 on their first road trip. True with a little better play from the D-backs bullpen, the Dodgers could have easily come home 2-4 instead of 4-2, but they found a way to win the games.

But nothing can compare to Opening Day at the Ravine though. Getting 4 in the 9th off the Hated One's vaunted new "closer." Gagne has never blown a save to the Hated Ones, and now Fenitez has already blown a save to the Dodgers. Gotta love that.

The only thing that went wrong yesterday was my &%$#ing TiVo didn't record the game. Since I have the digital cable setup, my TiVo needs to send signals to the Cable box when it needs to change the channel. Well the Cable Box only registered the '2' and not the '42' where the game was actually playing. When I got home and wanted to watch the final at bat, I was treated to crappy soap operas. I've never been so pissed at God's gift to couch potatoes in my life!!!

But like Cube once said: "It was a good day. After the initial euphoria of having Little Cesar go yard against Schmidt, there was nothing good about the game. 2 hits after the 2nd inning---pathetic. 2 extremely costly errors--blame that on the GM who doesn't seem to value fielding in his little computer.

And to top it all off, the Lakers were mathematically eliminated from the play-offs.

Hrm, the California Angels won, but screw them. The season is in the fridge. The eggs are coolin', the jell-o's jigglin', and the butter's gettin' hard. Now they're minus Lamar and Kobe has gone AWOL a little too frequently in recent games. The inevitable has become a reality. It's just a matter of playing for draft day selection. (I'm still haunted by the similarities of Auerbach/Celtics and West/Lakers with his franchise.)

Ishii is gone in another classic DePo trade where we pay our player to perform for another team. Dodgers are practically paying all of Ishii's salary and are stuck with the buyouts if the Mets don't exercise the options. In a bit of irony, we now have Piazza's backup as our starter. My how far the Catcher position has fallen on this franchise.

In better news, it seems now that BB is off the Cream, his recovery time has suffered considerably. Meaning he'll miss at least the first series against the Dodgers. I've got a hunch that without use of the Cream, BB will be missing many more games this year and we won't have to scream at Tracy to walk him like we all did last year.

Ah baseball. At least that gives me hope, 'cause basketball sure doesn't.

Peace out.

-El Maestro

Shaq 2-Kobe 0

I dare Kobe to say Shaq needs Kobe more than Kobe needs Shaq. They play like crap after taking an 8 point halftime lead and then don't have the fight in them to come back. To the Clippers of all teams!!! Somewhere Wilt Chamberlain is rolling over in his grave.

My guess is they'll be 2-4 on this road trip (at best) which means they'll probably be at least another 2 games out of the play-off race next time they play at Staples. With all the road games left and the team's tendency to take the bulk of the game off and then mount a furious comeback that falls short, well let's just say the play-off light at the end of the tunnel is fading.

I recently heard the Lakers will forefit their first round draft to the Celtics in some circumstance (a piece of the Payton-Fox trade to the Celtics). So if the Lakers don't make the play-offs and we don't get a first round pick out of it, then this basketball season will have been the biggest waste of a Lakers season since..... well.... probably the season Magic Johnson coached the team.

You know what the foo-bar'd part in all of this is? The similarity to the Celtics of a few decades ago. You know, Red Auerbach coaches all those championship teams, then builds the Larry Bird era team as a GM. Red gets pushed out and the Celtics have sucked ever since. Now look at the Lakers with regards to Jerry West. Freaks ya out doesn't it?

Dodgers defense in Spring Training sucks this year. Let's see if Depo's assertions that the defensive liabilities picked up over the off-season turn out to be pure BS.

Peace out.

-El Maestro

How much longer above .500?

Luke's afraid to shoot and Kobe is pissed everyone is afraid to take his final shot from him. The Lakers don't know how to play D and 1 game is the difference between the Kobettes (thanks to the Loose Canons on AM570 for that phrase) fizzling out to an embarassing first round sweep and the lottery.

Hrm, where should I start? Maybe if Kobe didn't proceed to alienate teammates, not everyone would be scared of taking the last shot. Man, what kind of pot was Jerry Buss smoking when he actually decided that Kobe could carry a team ('cause we all know Kupchak is just a little puppet for Buss to play with)? I'm sure there are quite a few people out there who would like to smoke some of the same stuff.

The Lakers had a nice comeback last night, though. Come to think of it, the Lakers are starting to assume the role of the Dodgers from the past decade (before last year). You know, tempt you with some raw talent that seems like it might be just enough to win, then come crashing down at the most critical moments. Only difference is the Dodgers didn't hover around .500 while teasing us with play-offs.

Man I can't wait to hear Vin Scully come on the air and calm my nerves. Nothing is more calming that listening to the poetry that comes from Scully's mouth during a game. He also possesses the one skill today's commentators could learn: knowing when to shut the &%$# up!!! Thankfully Bob Costas doesn't have a gig that allows him to talk through great sports moments (what should have been Michael Jordan's final shot) anymore. McCarver is a hack who frequently states incorrect facts or mispronounces names. But Vin, he'll just keep quiet as Kirk Gibson or Steve Finley round the bases in the most electrifying moment of the Dodger's season. I'd like to see Joe Buck pass on commentating during one of those moments!!!

Man, I started bitching about the Lakers and ended on a nostalgic note about Vin Scully and the Dodgers. A better ball-handler would be nice. Chucky Atkins does an OK job, but he's not enough of a threat to draw one of the multiple defenders as Kobe tries to throw up another ill-advised shot. But we can live with Chucky. What the team *desperately* needs is another big man to help Chris Mihm. A lame Vlade and hobbling Brian Grant just don't cut it. If Jerry West were still here (this team would probably still have Shaq+Kobe--but that's another rant) you can guara-damn-tee that there would be a new big man to help with the load. Remember how Mychal Thompson was brought on board to a very good team? The addition of Thompson wasn't absolutely necessary, but the NBA Logo was smart enough to know Thompson's addition would make the team that much better. Fast forward to the current lameness that is the 2004-2005 season and we have a GM that won't make any moves even though the team desperatly needs them.

It's almost like Mitch Kupchak has already given up on this year and is just waiting for the off-season and praying for a mircle, 'cause he sure seems incapable of creating one on his own. Or the more probable scenario is that he's waiting for Jerry Buss to tell him what his next move should be.

Man, Mr. Buss should have never picked Phil Jackson over Mr. NBA Logo. One clearly had the Lakers best interests at heart, the other is off meditating over God knows what.

Rant over. I sure can't wait to see the billboard of Koufax, Valenzuela and Gagne. If nothing else, the ad campaign will create some competition for the local baseball dollars, and since this is a capitalist society that can't be a bad thing, right? I guess only time will tell.

I'm also hoping this ad blitz will get more families out to the games and keep those drunken frat boys, that have taken over the stadium on game days, at their frat house where they belong. Ah, it's almost that magical time of year when Pitchers and Catchers report. Aah, as boring as people think it is, I love baseball. Going to Dodger Stadium is such a religious experience that even McCourt has a hard time screwing that up. Hopefully the modifications to the stadium will only add to the religious experience (although I know McBankrupt just wants it for the more expensive seats to fatten his bank account while he tries to pay off the Fox loans).

Just in case anyone cares anymore, the Lakers managed to finally pull of a comeback by forcing OT thanks to Vince Carter trying too hard. Do I look at the absolutes and say 3 losses are bad? Do I look at the gargantuan comebacks from the last 2 days and say with Kobe they win those? Do I remember that last year the Lakers lost at Atlanta and still managed to make it to the Finals?

All I know is that I'm numb. The Lakers should never lose to the worst team in the league. Period. It's like the Yankees losing all but 3 games to the D-Rays. Never gonna happen.

The sad thing is that even with Kobe back, this team has a long way to go. Maybe like the movie series that over-uses the title of this post, the ending will be happy. But the problem was that it was a long time before the ending came along. How long from that end are we? All signs point to this being the middle of the trilogy: Tragic event with some promise. Our hand may be cut off or something but there might be hope. Last night's game was further proof. The Spurs were sleep walking through the game when they decided to show up at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. They started playing D and limited the Lakers to one shot. What did the Lakers do? Pretty much whatever the Spurs wanted them to do. The only difference last night was a 23-2 run that the Lakers managed in the 4th. Yours truly had switched the game off by then, so there's no telling if that was against a full Spurs squad (including the earlier injured Tim Duncan) or the 2nd/3rd stringers the Spurs often put out against the Lakers these days.

How far this franchise has fallen. The only hope comes from knowing that this franchise has fallen before, and we've seen it rise from the ashes. Who will be the next one to carry us to the high ground? I can tell you for sure, it's not gonna be Kobe + Lamar. I'm not sure even Phil Jackson could get that duo to perform at championship level. But hey, Phil got Rodman to act nicely enough for a few championships, so who knows?

On a different topic, is there anyone outside the Dodgers organization that cares about the Dodger's latest Japanese import? Matsui like numbers 2 years ago, and now Green-esque type numbers the past 2 season? That just isn't exciting. But I guess if signing washed up players for less than a million dollars is your idea of a wet dream, then this might be right up your alley.

Oh well, back to checking up on the repairman who's fixing my washer at the moment.

Peace out.

-El Maestro

Rudy T, we hardly knew ye....

In a bizarre twist to what has already been a surreal year for the Lakers, rumors are rampant that Rudy T will be stepping down soon as Lakers Head Coach. The Lakers could easily be the #1 seed of a conference consisting of themselves and the Bobcats. The irony is that the Lakers still need Shaq to make the play-offs. Shaq helps beat the Rockets yesterday, and all of a sudden the Lakers leap-frog over the Rockets and are back in a play-off spot.

It's a shame the Lakers can only play the Bobcats one more time. I'm telling you, we'd have an awesome record if we got to play them more often (kinda how the Dodgers whoooped up on the D-Backs last year on their way to a division title).

A victory against an expansion team is no reason to be happy even if it does end a 3 game losing streak.

-El Maestro

PS. I don't believe Jack was there last night either.

Lottery, Here we are!!!!

With last night's typical futile attempt by the Lakers at posing as an NBA team, the bunch is now officially on the outside looking in for the play-offs. As they squeaked by the hapless Warriors and managed to squeeze by the struggling Wolves, everyone was proclaiming this team was much better off without Kobe. Now our suspicions have been confirmed. With Kobe, the Lakers are barely good enough to make the play-offs, without him they're a Lottery team for sure.

The Lakers are now a half game out of the play-offs with Kobe set to miss another 8 games at least.

Are there any 7 footers available in the draft this year? If so, maybe Kobe should just keep his sprained ankle on the sidelines. If he comes back and manages to land an 8 seed or something, we'd get squat from the draft and have another mediocre team at best next year. If Shaq is indeed gone because he would've been to costly in the long term (as the company lines seems to be), then getting a legitimate bigman through the draft that can develop into a bonafide NBA center wouldn't be a bad thing.

Oh well, it looks like I can start counting down the days until McCourt and Depo's boys give me reason for hope (those newbies should've never let Beltre get away!!!!!)

PS Compton wins the Australian Open!!! The only winning athletes that can even remotely be considered as representing SoCal are on the opposite side of the globe (and not beating up on Bay Area athletes like they're supposed to). Oh well, so goes the dismal state of SoCal pro sports--which is the reason this blog was started in the first place, no?

Over and out.

-El Maestro

The Kobe-less Lakers

So after starting 4-1 (if you count the Cavs game) after Kobe got hurt, everyone was saying "the Lakers are better off without Kobe." Led by those loud mouths of the Loose Cannons on Xtra Sports. Well after a thorough thrashing by the Sonics and a sound humbling by the woeful Clippers, it's now confirmed the Lakers are as woeful as we all knew they were. I expect Steve Hartman to fall of the wagon again tomorrow and proclaim the Lakers suck. Mychal Thompson will undoubtedly say the Lakers can still win the NBA championship (still can't believe he said the Lakers could win the NBA championship during the pre-season). And Vick "The Brick" will undoubtedly scream some opinion that doesn't make sense.

Oh well, at least another SoCal athlete was representing Down Under. Let's give it up to Serena Williams for fighting off 3 match points and teaching that little Russian Diva a lesson. (And here's hoping Davenport doesn't run out of magic and can come back after dropping the 1st set--she's currently serving to send it to a 3rd set.)

You know it's bad when I have to resort to tennis for my fill of successful SoCal Sports Stories.

-El Maestro

A night of crappy basketball

So tonight was the second game of my recreational basketball league. It was only the second time this group of guys got together, and believe me it showed as we were thoroughly embarassed. No sweat though. We only do that for fun, to make us think we're not old fogies (yet).

Little did I know the Lakers game was gonna be the exact same thing as the game I played earlier.

Let's see:
- Hosting up ill advised 3's? There were would be witty prose about the excitement of watching one of the great high schoolers to enter the NBA going upagainst the latest great high schooler to enter the NBA. Everything from the demeanors of both players during the handshakes before tip-off to the who got the best "facial" of the early going.

I would complain about how the Lakers don't hustle. How Kobe hogs the ball and doesn't get the rest of the team involved enough. How the Lakers let their center Chris Mihm do all the dirty work underneath the boards without trying to reward him with touches on the offensive end (I know he's not that great, but he's constantly pulling 10+ boards a night and altering shots when he's not in foul trouble).

But I must say I cannot do any of this. I'm sure you can all imagine the horror on my face as I turned on the tube last night to watch the beginning of the game and instead saw Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, Jason Kidd and Vince Carter come out for a tip-off. WTF?!?!?! In LA, we don't give a rat's ass about the ending of a game between the crappy Rockets and the crappier Nets!!!!!! I'll watch the highlights of that bowel movement manifestation on SportsCenter. All of LA wants to watch Lakers games (as crappy as the team may be) in their entirety. None of the other crap. We want our crap and only our crap!!!

So alas, I only have the replay of the unfortunate moment to remember and nothing else. So please join me and all other Lakers fan in giving a collective middle finger to the brain-trusts at TNT and the NBA (or whomever decided that it was a good idea to pre-empt local team games with the end of outside market games).

-El Meastro

Coming to you from the Center of the Universe!!!

Like my partner in crime for this endeavor, I too am an LA area native that spent some time in the Bay Area where the rampant jealousy of Dodgers Championships and Laker glory tore at the rotten core of all the Bay Area fairweather fans.

After moving back to the motherland I now get the refreshing voice of Vin Scully in the summers and flashbacks of Chick Hearn during the NBA season. Let's see if a little play time with Vanessa reminds Kobe he needs to play like a man and beats up on LeBron and Co. tonight.

Time to B!#ch

This is now officially my forum for complaining about the failures of LA pro sport teams.
